Fallout 2 Redux

Black Isle Studios’ Fallout 2 is a classic computer game that I’ve barely played.

When I bought the game, it was defaced by the removal of all the child-age characters in the European version of the game changed the experience somewhat (including missions that were effectively unsolvable). A much worse issue was the instability of the game - on the windows box I had back then, the game inevitably locked within an hour or so of play (and invariably upon entering a couple of locations). Hence, I played around with it and gave up before getting properly started, as the game was pretty much unplayable.

Now, equipped with a mean laptop certainly powerful enough to run this game in a virtualized environment, there’s news that an true connoisseur of the game has gone and implemented most of the content left out of the original game. Working from the developers notes, no less than six completely new areas have been added, with editions to the existing ones as well.

The patch is a) big and b) brand-new, so the amount of bugs is probably non-trivial. And I haven’t got the Fusion set up yet (nor even settled on that over Parallels). So, I’ll probably wait for a while before taking the plunge.

Playing the game twice (both the original version and the patched one) would obviously be an option here.

And with the not exactly imminent release of Fallout 3 in the autumn, that might be just too much post-apocalyptic fun for anyone.
