Seems that my membership in the finnish chapter of Electronic Frontier Foundation had lapsed (probably on account of an e-mail address gone stale).
The vigor the group has fought in the current censorship conflict has been exemplary and has to be rewarded, thus there’s no way of keeping me out.
Some new t-shirt […]

This week’s thursday challenge is winter.
My take on the subject is the attached image, taken early on a sunday morning in Salem, Massachusetts, after a heavy snowfall the previous night. This is a scene from the suburbia, heavily cropped in the shown version (a nasty wastebin lurks in the background of the original). […]

This week’s photo thursday challenge is joku raja. As an expression that doesn’t translate too well, and my take in the title does require a certain amount of linguistic gymnastics.
Originally I planned to include an image of the zero meridian in Greenwich, but cannot locate the original. And as a mere […]

Saw the Coen Brothers’ latest movie, No Country for Old Men, and quite liked it, and was quite perplexed by it.
This is a movie that resembles a western in all but the era, set in the early eighties, it gives convenient access to the war in Vietnam and old relatives reminiscing about the […]

Haven’t seen but a tiny fraction of the nominees, so the next list is bound to have gaping holes in its logic:
Leading actor
Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance in There will be Blood has been raved so widely, that this is an easy pick.
Supporting actor
Javier Bardem. On account of his worrisomely manic killer in No Country for […]

In addition to the raging internet censorship “debate” - of which wise things have already been written.
Debate is intentionally quoted above, since argument-wise this is a case of shooting fish in a barrel, and does not resemble a real debate in any way.
In descending order of international visibility:
Fedora vs. […]

Been one of the less-than-überachieving weeks. And that’s shown here in the blog as well. Just haven’t been able to summon the energy to write anything sensible.
Attended the first scandinavian Ignite-session on friday. Ignite is an O’Reilly-initiated variant of pecha kucha, a session where presenters have five minutes, and a […]

I’ve been a card-carrying member of the carnivore party pretty much all my life.
The news of the biggest beef recall in the states is pretty much the second time I’ve been questioning whether the place on top of the food chain is well-deserved.
The first occasion was reading Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food […]

Two blogs I’ve been a fan since encountering them are about to transform themselves into books.
Strangemaps has published close to 250 weird maps during its one and a half years of existence. Only an initial announcement of the blog to be has been published thus far, with no mention of a date. […]

In the ever-growing series of “how did I miss this?”:
Stone Temple Pilots is back, with the first gig scheduled for may 17th. Nothing is said about what the reunion means for Velvet Revolver.

I’ve been waffling about putting some words out on the finnish authorities misguided censorship campaign, but haven’t really been able to write an effective paragraph, let alone a consistent entry.
Thankfully the local EFF chapter laid out the sorry state of affairs in a thorough piece.
EDIT: The sanest man in the […]

n95 proved once again that there’s simply no way a phone camera can behave well in a challenging situation. The dark hall of Kaapelitehdas proved that good photographs are few and far between. A single one (of Mustasch) proved to be of usable quality and has been retroactively inserted into the appropriate entry.

Yeah, upon an overnight thought about Juha’s comment about making the blog wider, here’s the results: slightly over 25% increase on the effective playing area.
Report oddities if any. But do hit refresh a couple of times just to make sure it isn’t the browser’s caching habits that are to blame. […]

A week did not change things much in the “which Gaiman novel will be released for free”-vote, as the official results are now available, American Gods was the one selected by vox populi.
And like I said a week ago, and the author actually agrees, American Gods is not a particularly good selection. […]

A new Warren Ellis comic is always an event, and when a new one is launched free on the web, the interest is at least doubled.
FreakAngels just kicked off with a six-page starter.
It’s way too early to say anything about the comic itself, apart from it being immediately glued to the […]

The fallout from the pickups from FME continues, and this time the subject is not the return of a prodigal band.
Nope, this time it’s all about lyrics.
The culprit is Zwartketterij, a dutch thrash band, and the song from their new album Cult of the Necro-Thrasher:
Lick My Chainsaw, Bitch!
The music is by […]

The amount of memetics in this blog has significantly decreased since the untimely end of the weekly fiver.
Here’s a literary meme picked up at random (originally from Eating Muffins in an Agitated Manner).
Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror?
Science Fiction. But I’m not averse to good fantasy or horror either.
Hardback or Trade Paperback […]

Whoah, one of the flyers picked up yesterday at the FME noted that NWOBHM legends Blitzkrieg (probably most famous for Metallica’s cover of the eponymous song) are not only alive and screaming, but heading off to Finland to a duo of gigs in august.

I missed the release of the Zork Trilogy in a single package back in the late eighties. The games have been in the collection for ages, but only as single entries.
The main attraction of the collection is an actual zorkmid coin minted for this release and this release alone. The presence […]
