Biodiversity in the news

Today’s monthly supplement of Hesari contained a pleasant surprise, an interview with the finnish biodiversity researcher Ilkka Hanski.
Nice insight into collecting 30000 beetles from Madagascar, and fascinating glimpses into the extinct fauna of that island (gorilla-sized prosimians, gigantic birds).
Incidentally, the link into the magazine doesn’t take surfers to requests for payment. […]

Educating Lavonardo

Been reading an interesting book, a page a day for the last fifteen weeks or so. Know-it-all Book tackles various fields of study with a cliff’s notes version of a topic for each day. I’m pretty sure that in a year (the book has 365 pages) I can namedrop philosophers and discuss rococo […]

What to do in 2008 in case of boredom

The sadly-no-longer-available-in-Finland MIT Technology Review-magazine has put up their annual report on emerging technologies.
Some of the ideas are definitely high-concept, low-probablilty; such as reality mining, whereas some, like offline web applications are sensible off the bat.

Voima magazine has published their collection of busted ads. Like with the original, some miss the mark, but some manage to score several hits on a precision shot.

Sticking to the old

Seems that Wired issue 12/2007 is stuck somewhere in transit, and not available in Helsinki (nor elsewhere in Finland, if a brief visit to Tampere proves anything).
Trying to procure the magazine from ebay failed, as the shipping/handling fees for a single issue are a whopping $24.
I may be addicted, but not […]

New blogs

Continuing on the boring “let’s just list things”-category of posts…
This time focus firmly on new blogs. Just two of them, in fact - haven’t been that busy picking up any lately.

Sleevage, analyzing classic album covers for hidden and not so hidden treasures.

Magazineer, a blog about, erm… reading magazines, kicks off […]
