Macro Day 24.8.2008: Wet

It’s time to hop back on the photography challenges after a lazy summer.

And after the photo thursday participation, it’s time for the first Macro Day challenge in a while.

With the purchase of a real macro lens, a 100mm Canon, there’s no hiding behind equipment any more.

This week’s Macro Day challenge is wet. And today’s weather was just optimal to arrange for conditions, it kept raining for hours.

My take is a traditional “droplets on a leaf”. The nice bokeh is provided by the shallow depth of field used.

Macro Day 29.6.2008: Condiment

Macro Day 29.6.2008: Condiment

My participation to this week’s Macro Day challenge is late for a couple of reasons, the biggest among them a failed attempt to upgrade the equipment - the shops downtown seemed all to be sold out of the 100mm Canon macro lens.

Nonetheless, my attempt to rise to the challenge of condiment lies above, had to check out the definition of the word from wikipedia, and happily enough, this collection of sampler bottles of strong chili-sauces fits the bill perfectly.

Macro Day 22.6.2008: Handwriting

Macro Day 22.6.2008: HandwritingThis week’s Macro Day challenge is about having a close-up image of handwriting.

My take is the attached image, a detail off a facsimile declaration of independence bought in Philadelphia. Sadly, there seem to be no secret masonic message on the back as shown in National Treasure.

Macro Day 15.6.2008: Finger

Macro Day 15.6.2008: FingerThis week’s Macro Day challenge is about fingers.

Seems that creative juices were running really low today, and I ended up with the attached image, of my own left index finger. Thought about using a plush cthulhu or a cat conveniently lounging nearby, but the former would have been a rehash of last week’s “nose”, and the latter proved ultimately unco-operative.

Next week, with “handwriting” things ought to pick up.

Macro Day 8.6.2008: Nose

Macro Day 8.6.2008: NoseThis week’s Macro Day challenge points towards noses.

My choice is the most fearsome lagomorph in the known universe, famous from its role in the first Monty Python movie.

Yeah, I seriously thought I’d have a proper picture for this week’s entry, but the sudden onset of a summer flu forced a fallback on an alternate subject.

Macro Day 1.6.2008: Action Figure / Doll

Macro Day 1.6.2008: Doll / Action FigureThis week’s Macro Day challenge is all about toys, dolls or action figures to be exact.

The HQ is not really packed with either (plush penguins do not count, I suppose), so I had to delve into an NBA-themed lego-pack bought absolutely ages ago. Sadly, there were no guys in green jerseys to celebrate Celtics proud return to the finals.

Macro Day 25.5.2008: Laundry

Macro Day 25.5.2008: LaundryI’m again late with this week’s Macro Day challenge. The subject is laundry.

My take on the topic: the attached image of stacked yellow/orange t-shirts fresh off the clothesline.

Macro Day 18.5.2008: On Your Knees!

Macro Day 18.5.2008: On Your Knees! This week’s Macro Day challenge departs from the traditional “one word”-format and commands participants to go on their knees.

I did, and this is what got captured. A plant with a few puddles of water on its leaves (following a raindshower) standing tall in a field of decorative snowcrops.

Macro Day 11.5.2008: Cap

Macro Day 11.5.2008: CapThis week’s image in the Macro Day challenge could easily be Embroidrered, the sequel, from last week, so close is the subject to the original.

But it’s not. This week’s topic is cap.

And my take is a detail on a Utah Jazz cap bought a year ago, which is surprisingly still in a pristine condition.

Macro Day 4.5.2008: Embroidered

Macro Day 4.5.2008: EmbroideredThis week’s Macro Day challenge is embroidered.

My take on the subject is a close-up on a polo-shirt from Dublin, Ireland - a shirt festooned with a jolly toucan advertising Guinness.

Macro Day 26.4.2008: Engraved

Macro Day 26.4.2008: EngravedThis week’s very delayed participation in the Macro Day challenge is about something engraved.

I considered coins, but having used them recently, chose an old vinyl record instead (Master of Puppets, if you insist on knowing).

Macro Day 20.4.2008: Edge

Macro Day 20.4.2008: Edge

This week’s Macro Day challenge is edge.
Took a while to come up with a new subject, but in the end the newest implement of destruction in the kitchen won out - knife’s edge.

Macro Day 13.4.2008: Round

Macro Day 13.4.2008: RoundThis week’s Macroday challenge instructs the participants to go round.

My take on the subject is a selection of coins, definitely in the realm of the round.

Macro Day 6.4.2008: Sneakers

Macro Day 6.4.2008: SneakersThis week’s macroday challenge is sneakers.

Quite an appropriate timing, considering that today was the day I finally broke out my North Faces, as the long-stretched winter has let go of Helsinki.

Macroday 9.3.2008: Odd Toys

Macroday 9.3.2008: Odd Toys
This week’s macroday challenge is about odd toys.

It took me a good while to get to the grips with the subject - a close-up on the face of a plush Cthulhu seemed to be the best idea until yesterday evening. The irregularly played 2-on-2 table hockey tournament (report pending) provided just the imagery needed.

Macroday 2.3.2008: Ticket

Macroday 2.3.2008: Ticket
This week’s macroday challenge is ticket.

My take is the attached image, a ticket to last summer’s Sauna Open Air in Tampere, the thursday evening headlined by Megadeth. Who played the best gig of the year, easily surpassing Metallica.

Macroday 14.2.2008: Part

Macroday 24.2.2008: PartThis week’s macroday challenge is part.

And what would be a better take on the subject but a lego brick - definitely a part of something bigger, but not of just a single something, but whatever the builder likes.

My trusty S3 is having a hard time in less than optimally lit macro scenes, definitely time to start thinking about something more advanced in this segment.

MacroDay 10.2.2008: Produce

Macroday 10.2.2008: ProduceMy first ever participation on the Macroday challenge is about produce.

The subject is an uchuva close up. The fruit is called either pineapple cherry or lantern fruit in finnish, and it has no shortage of names in english either.

The full-size photograph is available by clicking on the image.
